VM Server Build
March 8, 2016
TL;DR
Following a drive failure on an aging VM server, the author has decided to build a new, custom machine.
- The original system was compromised due to a **drive failure** on an old Dell server.
- Data recovery was successfully performed by leveraging existing **RAID-5** redundancy.
- The new build is intentionally customized to avoid vendor lock-in and promote **flexibility**.
- The architecture is designed for modularity, facilitating *future* component upgrades over several years.

Recently, my old VM Server, an old Dell server that's edging on 6 years old, had a a drive fail. Fortunately I'm running RAID-5 on that system, and was able to rebuild the array. But, since that happened, among other things, it's time to build a new server...
Instead of ordering something like I've done in the past, I decided to build something custom. Something that I can upgrade over time if I need be, and part out for the next server, hopefully in another 5 or 6 years.
